Lionfish Hunting Safaris in Cozumel is a Very Popular Request!
While invasive lionfish are a terrible problem, we are excited that the word is getting out about the massive problem lionfish are causing in the Western Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Consequently, Cozumel has largely gotten the invasion under control but the island still needs our help to hunt lionfish and keep the damage they are doing to our underwater world to a minimum.
Will you help?
Here is a sample request we recently received and hope that it also helps answer some of your questions.
Subject: Lionfish Hunting in Cozumel
My friend and I are coming down for a week in early May from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We have our PADI Open water licenses and we are interested in hunting lionfish in Cozumel. Do you provide tours/ services for us to kill / hunt lionfish? If so, do you provide spears/gloves/containment units or do we need to bring our own spears? And finally if you do provide this service how much is the cost associated with it? We would like to book between the 7th and the 10th of May.
Thank you for your time,
Lionfish safaris and hunting in Cozumel is one of our most popular requests. We regularly guide lionfish hunts and hunting lionfish is a passion when we’re not working, too! We usually like to evaluate our certified diving clients for at least one dive prior to going hunting simply because it is an advanced activity underwater requiring a bit more experience, awareness and level of care with our precious underwater resources. For safety, we sometimes limit our lionfish hunts to 4 divers and send 2 hunting guides / divemasters.
We can provide pole spears and your guide will carry a Zookeeper (lionfish containment unit) and handle the lionfish once it has been speared. By rule, we cannot wear gloves in the Cozumel Marine Park. Have you guys ever used a pole spear before? No problem if not, we’ll just take a little time familiarizing you how they work and do a little practice before risking any damage to the reef or other creatures while underwater.
After the dive we can take your fish to one of several restaurants to have it expertly prepared, too!
The cost for a 2-tank lionfish hunt is $120 and includes at least one dive guide for every two hunters, lionfish hunting gear I mentioned above and all of our other diving amenities: tanks, weights, water, soft drinks, snacks, dry towels, etc. We have new scuba gear for rent if you need that as well; a full set rents for $20 a day. Our boat is fast, covered and gets to the dive sites quickly and comfortably. We’ll likely hunt in areas that do not see many other scuba divers in Cozumel, so you’re almost guaranteed an “adventure dive” too!
