Divemaster Certification in Cozumel

Divemasters are professional divers and as such carry a great amount of responsibility for planning a dive, conducting boat and dive safety,  and then assisting other divers during a dive. Often they act as guides giving other divers the opportunity to enjoy their dive without needing to worry about navigation, planning, not knowing the conditions or marine life, etc.

The ScubaLuis divemaster training (DMT) program is a thorough course of practical experience and study that employers demand. We will prepare you for a fantastic career rooted in adventure and the mystery of the sea in which no two days will ever be the same!

The ScubaLuis Divemaster Training (DMT) Program   $1,000

What is a divemaster (DM)?

The divemaster, or DM, ranking is the first tier on the ladder of professional diving. This is a diver who has been certified as an open water, advanced, and rescue diver, and has had a minimum of 60 open water dives in a variety of circumstances, including night diving.

As a professional diver, a DM is well suited and trained to guide other certified divers. They are taught how to safely lead a group of divers, local practices to ensure reef and sea life conservation, and serve as great resources for identifying marine life. DMs are also considered certified assistants enabling them to assist an instructor or assistant instructor on courses, but they are also able to certify skin divers on their own and lead a discover scuba diver on their second dive. Divemasters are also able to provide a scuba refresher course to a certified diver who has not dove recently.

What is divemaster training in Cozumel like?

PADI has a set criteria of minimum expectations a DMT must meet in order to become certified. At ScubaLuis we expect our candidates to exceed all the PADI criteria, and in turn we provide training above and beyond the certification requirements.

DMTs learn about equipment set-up and maintenance in addition to conducting minor repairs. Our candidates will also learn how to fill tanks with a compressor and have the opportunity to earn their gas blender certification enabling them to do enriched fills.

Candidates must learn how to present the open water diver skill circuit at a level of demonstration quality meaning they are shown slowly and with exaggerated movements. Your instructor will ensure that you have enough practice to earn a minimum of 4’s and 5’s on your final skill circuit evaluation. Any skill with a score below a 4 will need to be redone. This not only ensures high quality but will help prepare you should you decide to become an instructor.

PADI requires that you have led a group of certified divers. Rather than only having you guide a few times to be able to fill in your application, we will ensure that you have the opportunity to lead many dives under the supervision of a professional so that you can get immediate feedback. By the time you are certified, you will feel confident leading, briefing, and planning dives.

DMs are not often involved in logistics and operations, but we feel that these are critical parts of your education.ScubaLuis is not just training you for certification, we’re preparing you for a diving career.

You will have the opportunity to assist on multiple courses during your training, including continuing education courses (advanced, rescue, specialties) receiving both verbal and written feedback so you can improve on areas that you would like to strengthen as well as celebrate what strengths you currently possess. While you will have the chance to work with a variety of instructors, one of them will serve as your mentor. You will meet with them regularly to not only review your progress, to help keep you on track, but also to make sure you are feeling that your training experience is successful and that your needs are being met. Everyone has a different learning style, and we want to make sure you are getting the most out of your training with us.

As we have instructors dedicated to the DMT program, you also won’t be in a situation where you have to wait on an instructor’s schedule to free up so that you can get signed off on something. We want to make sure you get the most out of your program, and we’re committed to your success.

How long does becoming a divemaster take?

That most depends on the candidate. The average is around three weeks, but that is assuming you are already a rescue and advanced open water diver, have current CPR and first aid certification, and have at least 40 logged dives . However, we have also seen candidates who arrived in Cozumel needing their PADI rescue diver certification and their Emergency First Response CPR and first aid certification and were able to complete the DMT program plus two specialties within 2-1/2 weeks. It mostly depends on your goals, what requirements you have already fulfilled, and, most importantly, your determination. Some people have more time than others and can proceed at a more leisurely pace while others are under time constraints. We’re happy to consult with you prior to your arrival in Cozumel to let you know what time goals are realistic for you. As long as your goal is reasonable, will allow you to gain needed experience, etc., we will do whatever we can to help you meet that goal.

What diving equipment will I need to get started?

PADI has a list of required equipment to be used by professional divers. During your DMT experience, however, you will not need to have all of those items. DMTs have access to equipment to use during their training, though many divers find it helpful to at least have their own mask, snorkel, and fins. These can be purchased relatively cheaply through the dive center if you choose to get those items later. A dive computer is not considered essential, but it is highly recommended, especially once you’re certified. If you are not familiar with them, your instructor will give you an introduction to dive computers, their use, their value, etc., or you can contact the director of education prior to your arrival who can give you some guidelines as well.
