Have You Ever Wanted To Try Scuba Diving But Didn’t Know How to Get Started?
You’ve seen all the photos of the underwater world, and you’re intrigued. Perhaps you know someone who is a diver, and you’ve seen that look in their eyes when they talk about it. Or maybe you’ve snorkeled and wondered what it would be like to spend a lot more time underwater without needing to hold your breath.
“As a scuba diver you can escape the bonds of the earth’s gravity and experience the freedom and exhilaration of weightless flight through the underwater world. You will witness the beauty and the reality of nature and behold sights viewed only by those ‘surface humans’ who have chosen to leave the comfort and security of the atmosphere in order to ‘experience the underwater adventure’ rather than to watch others on a television screen.” – LH Sommers
Now you’re ready to leave the “surface humans” and take the next step to joining us while we explore our planet below its surface.
There are a few ways to get started. First, you want to find a dive center or instructor with whom you are comfortable. Many dive operations work on a rotation basis meaning that they have a system to decide which instructor will be teaching the next student who signs up for a course. However, you don’t have to accept the person they match you up with. Feel free to ask to meet with different instructors. Have a seat and chat with them. See who you feel the most comfortable with. If you decide to become an open water diver (the first full level of diver where you can dive without a professional), you’ll be spending a lot of time with this person, and they will be your safety net underwater.
Triple Sail in Cozumel Mexico only has a few scuba instructors and we will go the extra mile to ensure you are paired with the best instructor to suit your individual needs and comfort level. If at any time you feel we’re not right for each other, we can help you find a talented scuba instructor in Cozumel who is. No problem! Your needs come first.
Next, you want to decide what level of desire you have to begin. If you’re confident you’re ready to do this, then sign up for a PADI Open Water Diver certification course. If you aren’t so sure, then you might want to consider a Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) experience. During a DSD short course you will meet with an instructor and are given a brief introduction to the basic knowledge needed to dive safely. They will get you geared up and you’ll enter very shallow water where you’ll get to practice a few skills. Once you’re comfortable you’ll go out on very first dive!
“The potential for new discoveries are boundless in this underwater world. In the sea you may also discover yourself. You will learn both your capabilities and your limitations. Drifting freely over a coral garden you enter not only another world of physical beauty, but also a world of emotional and spiritual beauty. Beneath the waves there is peace!”
Discover Scuba dives can be done in a swimming pool, from a beach, or from a boat. Your first dive is always done with an instructor who will stay within arm’s reach of you at all times. Many instructors will actually hold onto your vest or tank so that you feel completely secure as you get used to moving around beneath the surface. If you’re like most people, you’ll pop out of the water at the end of your dive with a huge smile and totally excited to become a full-fledged open water diver.
If you have a child or young person in your group, know that they can join in the fun as well. At age 8 they can take part in a PADI Bubblemaker program, which is similar to a DSD but done in a more controlled environment. Kids as young as 10 years old can do a Discover Scuba dive and get certified as open water divers, too.
“By nature, man is an explorer. Can you accept the challenge of exploring the earth’s last frontier… the sea?”
